What is Your Coaching Philosophy? PDF Print E-mail
All Sports Coaching
Written by Team Coach 60
When you make the decision to step into the arena of guiding young men and women in the pursuit of athletic success, it is a question that will undoubtedly be posed to you.

Whether it comes from a school administrator, an inquisitive parent or a hot-shot recruit, you will need to address this query.

For newer coaches, the answer is still a work in progress as they look to find their identity. For more veteran coaches, the reply is easier because the answer likely already defines them.

In this issue of "60 Seconds on Coaching" we will begin to examine the components that are a part of every successful coach. The more comfortable you are in reflecting your philosophy -- how you believe the game should be played and what you expect from your athletes -- the more enjoyable your sideline experience will be.

Dead Ball Strikes Again PDF Print E-mail
Softball Coaching
Written by Billy Martin for Team Ref 60

If the batter PREVENTS the ball from ENTERING the strike zone by any method OTHER than hitting the ball OR a pitched ball HITS a BATTER while the BALL is IN the strike zone:

The play is considered a DEAD-BALL strike.

  • The BALL is DEAD.
  •  A STRIKE is given to the batter.
  •  RUNNERS must RETURN to original bases occupied at the time of pitch.

In NFHS play: Intentionally preventing the ball from entering the strike zone and making a travesty of the game can result in either a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct, restriction to the bench, or even ejection based on the umpires judgment.

Soccer Coaching

Freestyle/Street Soccer is the latest craze that your players either love, or once they discover it, they will go crazy for it. This is absolutely something you should include into your team warm-ups or just when you want to conduct a "fun" type session.

As a coach you will also love the fact that your players will spend lots of time practicing Freestyle Soccer on their own, which will improve their overall touch.

The FUTBOLEROS are considered the "Harlem Globe Trotters" of Soccer, and have created several learning tools to increase the skill levels of your players.

Over Running First Base PDF Print E-mail
Softball Coaching
Written by Blue Book 60

A batter-runner may OVERRUN first base and return directly to it without liability to be put out.

If she attempts to ADVANCE toward second base and decides to RETURN (to first) she is at risk to be tagged out.

However once the PITCHER has control of the live ball WITHIN THE PITCHING CIRCLE the following items may also apply:

  •  The BATTER-RUNNER may ROUND first base (towards 2nd base), STOP momentarily, then immediately WITHOUT STOPPING again …
  •  RETURN to first base.
  • OR she may ADVANCE to second base.

Provided the BATTER-RUNNER stops ONCE momentarily then either ADVANCES or RETURNS, it shall be legal … but is at liability to be tagged out if the pitcher makes a play on her.

This includes a BATTER-RUNNER advancing from a walk, dropped 3rd strike, or any legal method while the ball is live.

Tony Dungy Scoring In The Red Zone PDF Print E-mail
Football Coaching

Former Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy recently stepped into the glare of the public spotlight as an instrumental figure in helping controversial quarterback Michael Vick surface back in the NFL and with the Philadelphia Eagles.

While Vick may be the most recognized of the troubled athletes Dungy has offered his mentoring spirit to, he is by no means the only one. Dungy left the competitive world of the NFL with an eye on a prize as worthy as any Super Bowl trophy.

Winning the hearts and minds of young athletes across the United States to keep them on the right path, on and off the field.
