Written by Team Coach 60
When you make the decision to step into the arena of guiding young men and women in the pursuit of athletic success, it is a question that will undoubtedly be posed to you.

Whether it comes from a school administrator, an inquisitive parent or a hot-shot recruit, you will need to address this query.

For newer coaches, the answer is still a work in progress as they look to find their identity. For more veteran coaches, the reply is easier because the answer likely already defines them.

In this issue of "60 Seconds on Coaching" we will begin to examine the components that are a part of every successful coach. The more comfortable you are in reflecting your philosophy -- how you believe the game should be played and what you expect from your athletes -- the more enjoyable your sideline experience will be.

BE YOURSELF

Seems like an obvious statement, but many coaches lose their identity trying to emulate the style of a prominent coaching figure that doesn't mesh with their own personality, and he/she comes off as being less than genuine.

Certainly there are concepts and traits you can take from successful coaches, but you must always integrate them into your own style and philosophy.

And because the head coach is the hub of wheel with many spokes (i.e. assistant coaches, players, school staff, officials, etc..) you need to communicate clearly your expectations, while also being approachable by those who will be crucial in helping you carry out your mission.

Confidently expressing both your goals and your roadmap for achieving them, will build a level of trust that you are capable of building the road that will take the team to its desired destination.
